The mitochondrial protein ATP Synthase, embedded in the inner mitochondrial membrane.
Various proteins can be found on https://www.rcsb.org/pdb/home/home.do, the effective surface of the x-ray-diffraction data was computed using AMIRA 5.4.3. A single lipid for the membrane was modeled in ZBrush, the bilayer and the whole scene was assembled, animated and rendered in After Effects (Elements 3D Plugin, Version 2.2). The mitochondrium was modeled in Cinema 4D (very basic) and refined in ZBrush (DynaMesh, exported after reduction with “Decimation Master” to a small amount of triangles).
Rendering in After Effects using “Elements 3D” (Subsurface Scattering applied, Ambient Occlusion, DoF and filters for Chromatic Aberration) took about 4.75 seconds per frame (HD, 1920x1080 pixels; 16GB of Ram, i7).
The whole thing will also be done with other proteins of the respiratory chain in order to get a complete animation of oxidative phosphorylation for my lectures (focusing on aging research).
